Phobias! So for my FMP I've decided to theme it around Phobias, I've always found them to be quite interesting so thought it was the perfect theme to base my FMP on.
For my project, I aim to do between 10-15 characters, 10 at a minimum. This is a 20 week project, so time management is pretty important, I've scheduled in time for the printing process as well as in-case I get ill. I aim to work on a character a week, that's minimum 10 weeks, maximum 15. However if I soon realise 1 week isn't I can happily extend that time and reduce the maximum amount of characters.
As for this week, I'm mainly gathering references, sticking it all on a giant Pinterest board

At first I pinned various style ideas, as I was still unsure if I wanted to go stylised or a bit more realistic. So this first week was mainly just experimenting and seeing what I liked. I decided to paint a quick style test, I decided to just paint in the usual style that I do, kind of painterly but semi-realistic.

So creepy. I really like this painting, so I think for the others I'm going to aim to do them similar, however for my first character, which will be based on the phobia of butterflies, I'm going to experiment more and see what I come up with. Since it's to do with an insect I definitely want to play around with proportion and try and come up with some weird ideas.

This is what I came up with after a few hours of experimenting, I wanted to make the limbs a lot longer to give her an insect like look, and I actually quite like it it's not fully stylised which I'm pleased with. I wanted to still have quite rendered pieces, which I don't think really works with fully stylised paintings. For this project I want to do a final illustrations for each character, so the next thing I did was do one for this character, to see how well it translated into an illustration.

This is what I came out with. I based it on emperor butterflies. I showed this to tutors and they quite liked it. I hate it. I don't know why I just really hate it. So next week I'm going to move onto a different phobia and try something new. Hopefully something better.
